Kilkenny joined Glory in January 2018 having spent the previous season-and-a-half with Melbourne City where he was named Player of the Year in 2016-17. Earlier in his career, the midfielder chalked up nearly 350 appearances for a number of prominent English clubs including Birmingham City, Leeds United, Bristol City and Preston North End. Kilkenny moved to Australia with his family at the age of four and was brought up in Brisbane before returning to England seven years later to enhance his chances of pursuing a professional career in the game. He subsequently spent several years in the Arsenal youth set-up ahead of a move to Birmingham in 2004. At international level, meanwhile, he played for Ireland at Under-19 level and England at Under-20 level before declaring for Australia and winning the first of his 14 Socceroos caps to date against Liechtenstein in 2006. The versatile performer was part of the Australia squad at the 2011 Asian Cup and featured in the final against Japan. Kilkenny enjoyed a fine season in 2018/19, making 28 appearances and scoring six goals as Glory claimed the Premiers' Plate. At the start of the 2020/21 campaign, he had played 66 times in purple, scoring ten goals along the way and boasted a 100% success rate from the penalty spot.
