Who bosses the Hyundai A-League keeper stats?

The keepers’ union was thrust into the spotlight again last Saturday after yet another penalty save by Glory’s Liam Reddy. Opta analyses the stats to see who bosses the shot-stoppers’ stats this season.

The Glory man wasn’t psyched out by Besart Berisha at nib Stadium, pushing away the goal-bound effort to keep it at 0-0 in a game Glory won 2-1.

Impressively, it was Reddy’s third penalty save of the season, after he had twice denied Bruno Fornaroli in the 3-3 thriller against City in Round 12.

Not a bad effort by Reddy against two razor sharp marksmen who lead the golden boot race.

The veteran gloveman’s exploits for Perth represent almost half of the total number of penalties saved this season, with Wellington’s Glen Moss one behind on two, while Eugene Galekovic and Dean Bouzanis have one apiece.

However, it’s no surprise that in terms of goals conceded and clean sheets, Sydney FC’s Danny Vukovic has the best stats.

In fact the 31-year-old is out of sight having conceded just seven goals all season and racking up 10 clean sheets.

Despite their dismal start to the campaign Glen Moss is the next best in this category, with his performances helping the Nix to five clean sheets.

While Vukovic has no doubt been aided by the Sky Blues’ rock-sold backline, it’s also worth noting that his save/shot ratio is the best in the league among keepers that have played the majority of matches for their clubs.

The Sydney-born Vukovic has saved 40 of 47 shots on target this season (84.8%) – far superior to his peers.

The next best is Mariners’ goalkeeper Paul Izzo, who leads the league with total number of shots saved (62), doing so with a 72.1% save/shot ratio.

It goes to show the importance of an in-form goalkeeper, with Vukovic a vital cog in the Sky Blues “Invincible” run.

Similarly, Reddy and Moss are also playing vital roles in their sides’ surge up the table in recent weeks.
