Organisers hope Surf City Cup can help return A-League football to the Gold Coast

The organisers of the Surf City Cup, which will see Glory, Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets go head-to-head over the next week, are hopeful that its success will bolster the chances of a Gold Coast-based team returning to the Hyundai A-League.

Gold Coast United did, of course, feature in the competition for two seasons between 2010 and 2012 before having its licence revoked by FFA.

Now Adem Poric, CEO of The Magic Group which has organised the Surf City Cup, is hopeful that the populous Queensland region may soon be represented in the national competition once more.

“If anyone has the audacity to speak about having having A-League football on the [Gold] Coast,” he said, “they should be at these [Surf City Cup] games.

“They should be bringing their kids, their families. Everyone should be getting involved.

“That’s how we put a line in the sand and say to the A-League, we are big enough to have a club here and if it means having a boutique stadium, then that’s what we need to do.”

Poric is confident that the Surf City Cup will be a huge success, with ticket pre-sales tracking well and the pitch at the Croatian Sports Centre ground in superb condition.

And he also revealed that the tournament has been some time in the making.

“I’m very excited,” he said.

“What we’re hoping for is a good show.

“We haven’t had A-League football here on the Gold Coast for a numerous amount of years now and we wanted to bring it back.

“The venue is going to be tip-top, the field is looking great and the players will be firing to go because it’s a long pre-season and having quality games at this stage of pre-season is great for them.

“The process to get this up and going started three years ago.

“We had the idea, floated it around and here we are now, two days away from the event taking place.

“The plan is good, the work has been worth it and we’ll put the product on the field on Friday.

“Ticket sales are good; I’d say there’ll be over 2,500 per game.

“We’re hoping for more and you can get tickets on the door as you arrive.”

Glory’s two games are set to take place on Friday 30 August (v Roar at 6.30pm local time) and Tuesday 3 September (v Jets at 6.30pm local time).

Roar and the Jets, meanwhile, will meet on Sunday 4 September (4pm local time).
