Glory midfielder Gyorgy Sandor is pleased with Perth Glory’s new signings and believes the team’s depth is the secret to its success.
Since the club acquired Andy Keogh, Kristian Vadocz, Shane Lowry and Kosta Petratos in the January transfer window, Glory has rocketed from ninth to fifth on the Hyundai A-League ladder and is strongly positioned to feature in the Hyundai A-League finals.
The squad depth added by the quartet is what makes the team successful, according to Sandor.
“We worked hard in the pre-season and after that we struggled a bit,” the 32-year-old said.
“But then we signed a couple of good players and the team became much stronger.
“We have two to three players in the same positions on the park and they’re high quality. We have quality players on the bench as well.”
Glory’s four new signings have proven successful, notably Andy Keogh, who has scored 7 goals since his return to the club. Shane Lowry has also proven to be a shrewd signing at the back, while Kosta Petratos has provided a spark off the bench on several occasions.
Sandor also acknowledged his Hungarian compatriot Vadocz, whose towering presence in the middle of the park has galvanised Glory’s midfield.
“It’s good to have another Hungarian on board, and he’s a good player,” Sandor said.
“Our language is quite specific, if we speak in normal Hungarian I don’t think anyone knows it.
“We have a good connection because we can speak fluently with each other and say what we want, he laughed”
Sandor himself has been an integral part of Glory’s midfield engine, building his reputation in Australia as a hard-working, box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal. His goal tally sits at four for the season (FFA Cup and A-League) including a strike in round two against the ‘Nix, who the Glory plays on Sunday.
Despite enjoying his outings against the New Zealanders, Sandor is expecting a tight match up.
“Wellington is performing,” Sandor said. “All away games are difficult and I predict it will be a good, tough game played at a high intensity.
“Hopefully we’ll walk away with 3 points in our pockets.”
It’s set to be a big game across the ditch, with Glory gunning for a fourth place finish and the right to host a Hyundai A-League finals game.
Glory kicks off against Wellington Phoenix at 12pm WST at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.
