Perth Glory owner Tony Sage doubts David Beckham will be coming to the Hyundai A-League after being politely rebuffed by the former England superstar at this week’s Viva Forever musical in London.

Sage attended the premiere of the stage show based on the songs of the Spice Girls, and bumped into Beckham after the show. Sage was attending the event as a guest of Mel B, one of the five band members.

“I got the chance to chat to David, and of course I asked him about coming to Australia,” Sage told footballaustralia.com.au.

“He looked me in the eye and basically said, ‘That would be nice, but it’s too far away from my businesses’. It would have been great to have him at Perth Glory, but it looks like that won’t be happening. I just don’t think he’ll be coming to Australia, full stop.”

Perth Glory, Melbourne Heart and Central Coast Mariners have all expressed interest in bringing Beckham to the Hyundai A-League – mostly on the basis of a 10-game guest stint – since he finished his contract with Los Angeles Galaxy early this month.
