Glory pay the penalty in Sydney

Bobo’s controversial first-half penalty and another spot-kick from Adrian Mierzejewski condemned Glory to a 2-0 defeat against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

The Brazilian had sent an earlier penalty crashing against the crossbar before making amends in the final minute of the first half by finding the net after Joseph Mills was adjudged to have handled Luke Wilkshire’s shot.

The decision looked harsh on the Glory defender, but was upheld even after a lengthy referral to the Video Assistant Referee.

Substitute Mierzejewski then sealed the points for Graham Arnold’s men in the 93rd minute, rifling home following a foul from Xavi Torres on Milos Ninkovic.

Glory defended stoutly for long periods, with Liam Reddy outstanding in goal and went close themselves through Diego Castro, Shane Lowry and Chris Harold.

But although they finished strongly, as they have in every game so far this term, the visitors were ultimately unable to prevent the reigning Hyundai A-League champions from extending their unbeaten home run to 19 games.

Reddy was first called into action after nine minutes to keep out a fine effort from Jordy Buijs, before opposite number Andrew Redmayne matched him by producing a similarly impressive save to tip Castro’s free kick over the bar.

The Sky Blues swiftly resumed their assault on Glory’s goal, however and moments after Bobo had blazed wastefully over when well-placed, the hosts were awarded a penalty.

Mills was penalised for nudging David Carney in the back, but Bobo’s subsequent spot-kick struck the underside of the bar and failed to cross the line.

Wilkshire was then denied twice in quick succession by Reddy before Sydney finally broke through, albeit in controversial circumstances, as Mills fell foul of referee Shaun Evans and this time Bobo made no mistake from the spot.

Despite having spent much of the first half on the back foot, however, Glory almost went in level at the break as Lowry’s header from a Castro free kick drifted narrowly wide.

Reddy was again called into action to foil Bobo on the hour-mark, while Harold flashed a fierce drive over the bar at the other end as Glory battled their way back into the contest.

But with the home fans’ nerves perhaps just starting to flutter, Mierzejewski sealed the deal by successfully converting the third penalty of the game right at the death.
