Retro Corner – Just look at their faces!

There are some pictures that just get better the more you study them and this is definitely one of them.

Six years ago, almost to the day, Jacob Burns’ successful spot-kick in a tense shootout with Central Coast Mariners secured Glory’s maiden Hyundai A-League Grand Final appearance.

This is how his teammates reacted (minus Danny Vukovic who was adjacent to the goal preparing for the possibility of facing another and it is the variety of those reactions that are the key to the picture’s fascination.

Josh Risdon was seemingly the most confident that Burns would nail his penalty as he’s already on the run, with Scott Neville not far behind, while Dean Heffernan and Shane Smeltz are also poised to sprint towards the skipper providing they can escape the clutches of big Billy Mehmet.

But Josh Mitchell seems to be struggling to believe his eyes and Todd Howarth and Bas van den Brink both look as though they might not even have enough energy left to join the celebrations.

And, of course, there’s the poignancy of seeing the late Liam Miller arm in arm with some of the teammates to whom he meant so much at the business end of a season in which he played such a pivotal role.

It truly is a wonderful moment captured in time and if you’d like to share your memories of celebrating that groundbreaking victory at what was then known as Bluetongue Stadium, join the conversation via Twitter or on our Facebook page.
