Perth Women build solid foundations

The Perth Glory Women have ended their season with an entertaining 0-0 draw against finals bound Newcastle Jets in front of an appreciative crowd at Members Equity Stadium today.

The Purple Hearts went into the final round of matches needing two results to go their way, and whilst the Central Coast Mariners lent a hand with a 2-0 victory over Melbourne, Sydney FC withstood a late Adelaide fight back to secure the fourth and final playoff position 24 hours before the Glory took to the field.

The Glory and Newcastle together with the referees took to the field wearing pink armbands and ribbons in an effort to raise money and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation amid sweltering Perth day.

Both teams created good chances throughout the match but were unable to break the deadlock despite 28 shots on goal between them. Both keepers were called into action regularly and did well to preserve the stalemate.

Star striker Lisa De Vanna had the best of the chances for the home side but was unlucky in her efforts to find the net, one rolling just past the post while another went centimeters wide after a a blistering volley.

Glory coach Nicola Williams was pleased with her side-s progress throughout the season and believes it has built a solid foundation for the future.

“It-s very exciting moving forward, we have a young group of players getting better with every match they play and the experience they are getting is invaluable. If we can keep the group together then the sky is the limit really” she said.

The Glory finished the inaugural Westfield W-League season in seventh place, with three wins and two draws whilst the Jets secured second place and a home semi final against Canberra United.
