Perth Glory striker Daniel McBreen might be signed to Central Coast next season, but he’s committed to continuing his tremendous goal scoring form right into the finals for the Glory.
McBreen has now played four matches for four goals for Perth since signing with the Glory after being with the North Queensland Fury up until that point on his return to Australia.
The 32-year-old signed with the Mariners for the 2010/11 A-League campaign, but that left a gap for the rest of this season and it has been filled with him coming to Perth.
He scored a brace against his soon-to-be Mariners team on Sunday to help Perth to a 3-1 victory and virtually guarantee a finals berth. He couldn-t have imagined coming to the Glory working out so well.
“I could have imagined it, but I don-t know if I thought it would have come off so well. Everything has just gone well for me with four goals from four games, I just can’t believe my luck. It’s been great,” McBreen said.
“I love it here. The people have been great and the city is wonderful, so I’m enjoying my time while here and everyone knows I’m only here for this season. Coming here was the chance to get some more games, hopefully score some goals and get finals football. It looks like we are going to get that so it’s a goal that has been achieved and now we have to try and kick on from there.”
There was no chance McBreen was ever going to go lightly on the Mariners on Sunday and was glad to score his two goals, but is grateful to coach Lawrie McKinna for allowing him to play with the Glory for the rest of this season.
“I’m playing for Perth now, it’s not Central Coast until next season so it doesn-t really matter who we’re playing. I was never going to take it easy against anyone. I’ve proved his point of why he signed me and I’ll try to do more,” he said.
“We cleared it with him before we came and he told me to go to get games. He didn-t want me to be not playing as well coming into next season, so it was good for him to let me come but in the long run better for him because I’m getting match time and keeping fit.”
McBreen signed with the Fury following stints overseas including most recently in England with Scunthorpe United, St Johnstone and York City. He enjoyed North Queensland, but when he signed with the Mariners he was quickly discarded, but holds no grudges with coach Ian Ferguson.
“When I was up there the gaffer came in and said that Mitch wanted me and that my time was limited because I’d signed with Central Coast. They wanted to look to the future for other guys, so when the opportunity came I took it because I thought I’d get some game time here,” he said.
“I look back on it fondly. I was getting a bit disillusioned in England over those years where it’s cold all the time, so to get up there was great. They had a great bunch of guys and some good quality, so I got my fitness back and enjoyed my time there.”
Glory coach Dave Mitchell has also recommended Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek to seriously consider McBreen for selection, but McBreen is just focusing on his football.
“I’ll let him talk about that. I’m just going out to play for Perth. Obviously it would be great to be bandied about for the Socceroos, but I don-t think about that stuff,” he said.
“I just go out and play the game, and whatever comes from that, comes from it. Everyone wants to be involved in the national setup, but I just try to keep those things out of my mind and just play.”
