Match Preview: Glory look to maintain perfect start in Adelaide

Our Westfield W-League side will be out to make it three wins from their first three games of the season when they face Adelaide United on Friday afternoon at Marden Sports Complex.

It’s been a blistering start to the campaign for Glory, with consecutive 4-1 wins over  Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar lifting Bobby Despotovski’s side to the top of the standings.

Perth’s attacking form has been hugely impressive, with new signing Rachel Hill proving an absolute revelation having scored five goals in the opening two games, including a hat-trick against the Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

Adelaide, meanwhile, were unfortunate to not gain at least a point from their season-opener against Western Sydney which saw them dominate possession for long periods before being condemned to a 2-1 defeat by a late goal from former Glory favourite, Rosie Sutton.

With United having only played only once so far this year, they will be fresh and determined to gain their first points of the campaign.

The Remembrance Round fixture will also serve as a mini-reunion for one of Glory’s former forwards, Alyssa Mautz, who is now a key part of the Adelaide side.

Key Match-Up: Kim Carroll v Makenzy Doniak

Carroll has been at her commanding best in the opening two rounds of the season alongside new centre-half partner, Amanda Frisbie. The pair have been rock solid and key to the rapid transitions from defence to attack. American Makenzy Doniak, meanwhile, has hit the ground running in the W-League, scoring on debut for Adelaide against the Wanderers and Carroll will be hoping to keep the livewire forward quiet come game day.

One-to-Watch: Raquel Rodriguez

The first ever Costa Rican player to grace the W-League, Rodriguez has made an impressive start to her time in Australia, with her strength and composure proving crucial in the middle of the park.

While our forwards have gained all the plaudits, ‘Rocky’ certainly deserves praise for her hard work in quashing numerous attacks and providing a string of key passes through to the likes of Hill and Sam Kerr.

With away wins notoriously tough to grind out in this league, the number 10’s tireless work-rate will be vital on Friday.

Last Time We Met: Perth Glory 1-2 Adelaide United

Perth will be out for revenge this week, with Adelaide having claimed their first ever win over Glory in last season’s Round 13 clash.

United became the only away side to claim all three points at Dorrien Gardens, with Danielle Colaprico’s second goal of the evening on 84 minutes capping off an eventful match in which Kerr received her marching orders late on to compound the hosts’ frustration.

It was certainly a fiery encounter last time out and more drama and excitement is surely in store this time around as Glory go in search of their 50th W-League win.
