Kerr’s Triple Treat

Samantha Kerr bagged a hat-trick as Westfield W-League leaders Perth Glory thrashed Sydney FC 5-0 at WIN Stadium.

The Matildas star took her tally for the season to 10 goals and put a massive dent on the Sky Blues’finals hopes.

“We knew Sydney would come out firing and we came out and matched them and I’m pretty stoked as this is my first hat-trick, but it was an awesome team performance today,” Kerr said.

It was a bright opening in the wet conditions as Sydney’s Renee Rollason saw her shot blocked on the line, before Sydney custodian Casey Dumont made a good save to deny Kate Gill.

The deadlock however was broken seven minutes in as Caitlin Foord and Kerr combined to fire past Dumont.

Sydney was desperate for the win and looked to hit back quickly but Amy Harrison’s long-range shot crashed off the crossbar.

There was more heartache for Sydney FC at the quarter hour as Glory doubled its advantage. Kerr’s ball into the penalty area caused problems and Alesha Clifford barged Gill in the penalty area and  referee Kate Jacewicz  pointed straight to the spot. Gill stepped up and fired home her 12th goal of the season.

Kerr was causing havoc down the right and on 41 minutes her pace took her clear again, crossing the ball from the bye-line to Foord, but her shot was cleared off the line. Four minutes later Glory had another. Collette McCallum found Gill, who played the ball back to Foord, who fired low past Dumont from 25-yards to give the Glory a three goal advantage at the break.

Kerr continued her ‘Player of the Match’ performance after the break.Foord broke down the middle of the park and picked out Kerr on the right. The striker cut inside the penalty area, and held off Teresa Polias before firing into the corner of the net.

Sydney brought on Kyah Simon in the 66th minute, for her first competitive game since her ACL injury, but it was Harrison who went close to pulling a goal back on 67 minutes, but Mackenzie Arnold was alert to save. The visitors put the icing on the cake with a fifth on 75 minutes. Substitute Elisa D’Ovidio found Kerr on the right of the penalty area and her delicate chip beat Dumont to give the visitors a 5-0 victory.
