Perth Glory Westfield W-League skipper Sam Kerr could make history later this year by becoming the winner of the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or.

The 25-year-old, who re-signed for her hometown club last week, is one of 15 nominees for the iconic award which, for the past 62 years, has only been presented to male players.

The winner will be chosen by editorial staff of prominent French publication, ‘France Football’ and presented with the glittering trophy at a ceremony set to take place in Paris on 3rd December.

Kerr will be up against the likes of Brazilian legend Marta, American superstar Megan Rapinoe and no fewer than seven members of Lyon’s Champions League-winning side in Lucy Bronze, Ada Hegerberg, Amandine Henry, Saki Kumagai, Amel Majri, Dzenifer Marozsan and Wendie Renard.

The Matildas striker has, of course, already received a swathe of honours in the last 12 months, including Young Australian of the Year, Asian Women’s Footballer of the Year, Women’s Health Sportsperson of the Year, the Julie Dolan Medal and National Women’s Soccer League and W-League Golden Boot awards.

Glory’s W-League campaign starts on Sunday 28 October, with the first home game on Saturday 17 November and you can grab your bargain membership HERE.
