Perth Glory’s Irish striker Andy Keogh will lead a colourful convoy of more than 40 decorated floats, through the streets of Leederville at this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Keogh, will be the Grand Marshall for the annual event this Sunday March 15, which is expected to attract more than 20-thousand people this weekend.
The 28-year old striker, who has played 30 times for the Republic of Ireland, and so far scored 15 goals in all competitions, said it was a privilege to lead the parade.
“It’s a big occasion for the Irish people of Perth and everyone loves to celebrate it as well. It’s definitely a big deal, only one person can be picked for it, so it’s an honour and it’s going to be a great occasion” he said.
According to tradition, St Patrick spent years converting Pagans into Christians across Northern Ireland and his Feast Day is celebrated on the 17th March. It’s also customary to wear shamrocks or green clothing, as it’s believed St Patrick used a three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.
While Keogh won’t be in his homeland this year to celebrate the day, he’ll still be surrounded by close friends and family at the festival.
“Everyone’s going to come and enjoy the occasion and you know it’s a proud moment for them to come and watch me lead the parade and enjoy the atmosphere and the rest of the day to celebrate”.
The parade starts at 10am on Newcastle Street, next to the Water Corp building and will wind its way through Oxford and Vincent Streets before finishing outside Medibank Stadium (Leederville Oval).
The parade will be followed by a huge Family Fun Fay at Medibank Stadium from 11am with plenty of family friendly activities, including bouncy castles, face painting, a petting zoo and a host of games to keep kids and adults of all ages entertained until 5pm.
The night before the parade, Keogh will be starring for Glory against Wellington Phoenix in another exciting top of the table clash at nib Stadium.
