Keeper on close watch

Glory goalkeeper Tando Velaphi is expected to train with the side on Friday before a decision is made on his availability for this weekend’s clash against Brisbane.

Glory goalkeeper Tando Velaphi is expected to train with the side on Friday before a decision is made on his availability for this weekend-s clash against Brisbane.

Velaphi suffered a concussion in the closing stages of Perth-s 2-2 draw against Gold Coast and had to be helped from the pitch in the 90th minute. He spent Sunday night in hospital for observation however scans cleared him of any significant damage and he is making steady progress each day.

The 22 year old has no recollection of the collision with striker Shane Smeltz and can-t recall defender Jamie Harnwell deputising for him in the final few moments of the game because Perth had already made their maximum three substitutions.

“We are monitoring him after he took that knock on his head. He is a terrific young kid and certainly his health is the most important thing,” said Mitchell.

“We want to make sure he is right if he is going to take part this week-s game but if not we have got Aleks Vrteski who has been dying to get between the posts.

“Aleks has been looking very good, so we have someone to fill in if Tando is not well.

“We-ve got to make a call and it is the doctor that is directing that and not really a coaching issue.”
