A heartbreaking knee injury has ruled Perth Glory and Westfield Matildas striker Kate Gill out of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

A heartbreaking knee injury has ruled Perth Glory and Westfield Matildas striker Kate Gill out of the 2011 FIFA Women-s World Cup.

The 2010 AFC Women-s Player of the Year was playing for her Swedish club side Linköpings FC when she sustained a serious Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.

“This is a massive blow for Katie who has been going from strength-to-strength over the past few years,” said Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tom Sermanni.

“Although it is devastating news for Katie, she is a true professional and I am sure she will come back stronger than ever.

“It’s disappointing for the whole team whose thoughts go out to Katie.”

Gill is currently in Adelaide for surgery and could miss up to 12 months of football, also ruling her out of the next Westfield W-League season.

The all-time second highest Westfield Matildas goal scorer was expected to be a pivotal player in deciding their World Cup fate.

Australia-s 2011 FIFA Women-s World Cup kicks off on June 29 against Brazil in Moenchengladbach, Germany.
