Jets penalty edges Glory in Newcastle

Thumbnail

Glory’s undefeated start to the Westfield W-League season came to an end after a narrow 1-0 away defeat to Newcastle Jets.

Import Jennifer Hoy’s 48th minute penalty proved the difference, after the American was taken down at the front post by Glory defender Arianna Romero. Hoy placed her strong right footed strike across Maizels into the bottom left corner.

The first half proved tense and tight, with opportunities a rarity for both sides. Vanessa DiBernardo almost got Glory off to the perfect start when her 30 metre pile-driving shot crashed off the upper side of the top bar. Kerr went close on two chances, while Jets goalkeeper Kelsey Wys was substituted early on with a knee injury.

After Hoy’s strike in the second half, Glory regained control of the match and piled the pressure on the Jets. Kerr’s one-on-one effort was saved well by Coelho, before a late push saw Mautz place a shot narrowly wide of the far post. Mautz then turned provider for Kerr with a well-weighted cross, but the captains header drifted inches wide of the far post.

The win puts the Jets on top of the table for now at least, while Glory drop down to fourth place.

Glory now have a long break before taking on Melbourne Victory at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on December 4. Glory then return home to take on Sydney FC on December 11 at Dorrien Gardens, ticketing information here: http://www.w-league.com.au/tickets
