Following a first-half foot injury during the match against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, scans have today revealed a ligament rupture to Sam Kerr’s left foot, ruling her out of the remaining Westfield W-League season.
The Perth Glory Women captain collapsed to the ground in the 20th minute of the first-half, after a non-contact injury.
An initial assessment suggested the injury was not serious but today X-rays on Kerr’s foot revealed a significant rupture, which will sideline her for at least three months.
“To say that I’m bitterly disappointed is an understatement. I worked hard after undergoing surgery to my left knee at the end of last season and now this happens” she said.
“I’m thankful however, that it’s happened now and I have every chance to recover in time for the Rio Olympic qualifiers in March.”
“I would like to wish my teammates all the best for the remainder of the season and hope they take the positive energy from Sunday’s win into the rest of the season,” she said.
Women’s coach Bobby Despotovski wished Kerr a speedy recovery and said he’d be on the lookout for a replacement striker.
“First of all my heart goes out to Sam. I can’t believe this has happened to her but knowing the fighter that she is, she will bounce back. We’ll sit down and assess our options over the coming days and see if we can recruit a replacement striker” he said.
Kerr has scored one goal this season, and has appeared in four of the five W-League matches for Glory Women.
Perth’s next match is at home against Melbourne Victory at Ashfield Reserve on November 28.Â
