History Mystery – Jousting with the Jets

While preparing to start the build-up to our Round 2 clash with Newcastle Jets, we stumbled across the attached shot taken by our friends at Getty Images.

And as potential History Mystery pictures go, it was simply too good to turn down.

So who is the Glory player whose face is so very neatly covered by the ball?

In terms of clues, we probably don’t need to tell you that the man in question is tangling with former Glory midfielder Kasey Wehrman who chalked up nearly 50 appearances for the club between 1999 and 2001.

And context-wise, we can tell you that the game took place at what was then known as Ausgrid Stadium in November 2011.

Ian Ferguson was in charge and we had won three of our opening four games of the campaign ahead of the trip to the Hunter Valley.

The season would, of course, culminate in our maiden Hyundai A-League Grand Final appearance, but we ended up on the wrong side of the scoreline at Ausgrid on the day in question as two goals in the space of a minute from Jeremy Brockie sealed a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

We should point out, however, (purely in the interests of fairness!) that this defeat was one of only five that we have suffered in 18 visits to Newcastle and also mention that we have won there more times (10) than at any other away A-League ground.

So now we’ve got that off our chest, can you name the mystery man?
