High class clash

Star defender Chris Coyne has called on the Glory faithful to turn out in force as Perth’s unbeaten home record goes on the line against league leaders Gold Coast United on Sunday at ME Bank Stadium.

Star defender Chris Coyne has called on the Glory faithful to turn out in force as Perth-s unbeaten home record goes on the line against league leaders Gold Coast United on Sunday at ME Bank Stadium.

It is sure to be a blockbuster game and has been dubbed the ‘Iron Ore Cup-, in recognition of both club-s owners key involvement in the mining industry.

Perth-s Socceroos trio of Coyne, Jacob Burns and Mile Sterjovski will need to be on guard against Australian team mate Jason Culina and the rest of the Gold Coast crew including in-form Kiwi striker Shane Smeltz who has banged home a remarkable eight goals in five matches.

“With the quality that has come back into our team now, there is no reason why people should not come back,” Coyne said.

“I would like to think there will be a few more bums on the seats this weekend, given the quality of the opposition as well.

“It-s a tough league, there are a lot of players that have come back into it now and teams are spending a lot more money now so they (Gold Coast) are the benchmark but I know with what we-ve got here I-m confident of doing the business.”

Glory and Gold Coast met in a pre-season match in Bunbury at the end of July however many of the high profile recruits from either side had only just arrived at their respective camps.

This time there are competition points on the line and the Queenslanders will again travel west by private jet courtesy of Billionaire owner Clive Palmer in hopes of ending Perth-s perfect record at ME Bank Stadium this season.

“You want to play the best and at the moment that-s Gold Coast and we want to knock them off their perch. It-s a great game to look forward to.

“They are big talkers, but they are also walking the walk, so when you can do that then fair play to them.

“They-re a good strong well organised side and having the chance to play them in pre-season was a good insight into what they-re about but they-ve got to come to us and we-re not scared of anyone at our place.

“I-m sure we-ll put on a good performance, in fact I guarantee that.”
