Captain Rostyn Griffiths believes the team will draw strength from the calibre of talent within and draw on the experience of playing in two consecutive FFA Cup Grand Finals (2014, 2015) when it meets Melbourne City in this weekend’s Hyundai A-League Elimination Final at AAMI Park on Sunday night.
Perth Glory will enter the knockout match on the back of a highly charged 5-4 win over City, in what was the last regular league match of the season at the weekend.
Griffiths said with two consecutive wins on the board (Brisbane and Melbourne City), confidence was high within the squad.
“We’ve been picking up some good results in the last few weeks, some players have stepped up and we’ve got some big name players and I’ve said all along we’ve got players that have played in the Premier League, we’ve got boys who’ve played in La Liga.
“We always seem to do well in knockout competitions. We got to two FFA Cup Finals, so when it comes to knockouts we’ve got boys who can step up on the day and like I said we take heart from the game (against City).
Ironically Glory met City in the same elimination fixture at AAMI Park this time last year, which Perth lost 2-0.
Griffiths joked this time the difference was “I’m here now”.
The 29-year old said while last Sunday’s match was entertaining for the neutral he wouldn’t want to be part of another “mental” game which had nine goals.
“We’re going in with momentum as well we’ve been building for the last few weeks, hopefully it won’t be the same as the weekend game but if we win by one more I’ll be happy” he said.
The match, which will be Coach Kenny Lowe’s 100th in charge kicks-off at 7pm EST and will be broadcast on Fox Sports.
