Perth Glory FC winger and former Socceroo Richard Garcia has supported calls for WA’s new stadium at Burswood, to be officially opened with a blockbuster clash between the Socceroos and another football powerhouse.

Football West, wants the State Government and Football Federation Australia to consider opening the new 65,000-capacity stadium involving the Socceroos and a strong football nation such as Brazil, Spain or Germany.

Garcia, who represented Australia 18 times, and played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, said the idea presented tremendous opportunities for Western Australia and should be backed.

“I think that would be fantastic. Perth hasn’t really seen something like that and something as big as an international match at a new stadium would be fantastic” he said.

“Not only for Australia but for WA.. I’m sure you could probably sell a game like that three or four times over so it’d be fantastic for WA” he added.

Perth has not held a Socceroos match since 2005 when it played Indonesia at Subiaco Oval.

A Socceroos game at the new Perth Stadium would require State Government support and an agreement from a world-class opponent.
