Fowler ready for take-off

Former Liverpool and England star Robbie Fowler has been given the green light to make his debut for North Queensland Fury in Perth on Wednesday.

Former Liverpool and England star Robbie Fowler has been given the green light to make his debut for North Queensland Fury in Perth on Wednesday.

Fury will play English Premier League side Wolves in a double-header at Member’s Equity Stadium, which will also see Perth Glory take on Fulham.

Fowler has been dogged by groin and hip problems since joining Fury in February but is finally set to turn out for the Hyundai A-League newcomers after coach Ian Ferguson said this afternoon he would give his marquee player a long-awaited run-out.

“I’m hoping to be involved – in terms of fitness I’m probably miles behind the rest of the lads but as everyone knows you get that through games,” Fowler said.

The star striker said it has been ‘horrible’ not being able to play matches since arriving in Australia but is keen to make up for lost time, starting tomorrow.

“Anyone will tell you (that) you go to a new club, you go to a new place and you want to be involved straight away. In terms of kicking balls I’ve not been able to do that, so hopefully there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel and I’ve got something to look forward to.”

Perth Glory owner Tony Sage, who is footing the bill for bringing two EPL sides and Fury to Perth, will no doubt hope the presence of a football superstar such as Fowler will see a larger crowd than the 11,000 who turned up for Glory’s clash with Wolves last Friday.
