Finals spot up for grabs this weekend

Perth Glory women coach John Gibson says his troops are ready for the challenge that awaits them on Sunday afternoon when the Westfield W-League side hosts Melbourne Victory.

Perth Glory coach John Gibson says his troops are ready for the challenge that awaits them on Sunday afternoon when the Westfield W-League side hosts Melbourne Victory.

Last week saw Perth defeat Adelaide United 2-1 on the road thanks to Sam Kerr-s first-half brace, while the Victory drew 0-0 with Brisbane Roar.

The last time the two teams met saw the Glory upstage Melbourne at AAMI Park with a late 1-0 win thanks to super substitute Monnique Kofoed.

If Perth can claim all three points this weekend and Newcastle are defeated by Brisbane, then an inaugural finals berth will be guaranteed.

Gibson says he was pleased with how his team had the ascendency against the Lady Reds last week.

“Yeah pretty happy with the performance against Adelaide, particularly with the response from the previous week,” he said.

“The game was pretty much under control and us being slack allowed them to score their goal.

“We-re just going to go out on Sunday and do what we do every week – we-ve trusted that all year and we-re not going to change that philosophy.”

The Glory coach is impressed by Vicki Lenton-s Victory side and cannot wait for the match to get underway.

“They-re a really good side actually, really well organised, well-disciplined and they play to their strengths,” he said.

“In every game we go into we come in with a certain amount of quiet confidence and this will be no different.”

Kick-off at Inglewood-s 6PR Stadium will be at 5pm.

The match will also be a fundraiser for the Premier-s Flood Relief Appeal.
