Perth Glory’s Spanish marquee player Diego Castro has been named the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Hyundai A-League Player of the Month for March.

The 33-year old has taken out the gong after back-to back after being crowned the player of the month for February. Castro joins Melbourne City’s Bruno Fornaroli as the only player to have won the award twice in one season.

On target on three occasions during March, the Spaniard was instrumental in the Glory’s surge up the ladder.

Now eyeing off the club’s elimination final clash with Melbourne City, Castro said he was thrilled to be named as the Player of the Month.

“To win the award once is an honour, to have won it twice in one season is unbelievable,” said Castro.

“I’m extremely thankful to all the players that voted for me. As all players know the recognition of your fellow professionals means so much.

“I would also like to thank my teammates and everyone at the club for their support and I’m determined to enjoy more success in the coming weeks.”

PFA President Matt McKay said Castro’s outstanding form had made him an extremely worthy recipient of the award.

“Diego has consistently been amongst the league’s best, and for March this was no different,” said McKay.

“His goals and all round play have been huge contributors to what has been a truly remarkable A-League season.

Castro scored 13-goals in the regular Hyundai A-League season including a stunning volley from the top of the box against Melbourne City at nib Stadium in RD 26, arguably the goal of the year.

The Perth Glory attacking midfielder will be aiming to add more to his goal tally this weekend when Glory clash against City in the second elimination final at AAMI Park.
