Academy First Team power past Bayswater

NPL 2021 - Glory v Bayswater City - players celebrate in a bundle

Second-half goals from Adam Zimarino, Josh Anasmo and skipper Giordano Colli powered the PGFC Academy First Team to an impressive 3-0 win over Bayswater City in Saturday’s NPL WA clash at Crazy Domains Stadium, Hartfield Park.

The victory, which followed a similarly eye-catching performance against runaway league leaders Floreat Athena last time out, moved Ruben Zadkovich’s side level on points with fourth-placed ECU Joondalup.

There was little to choose between the two sides during a hard-fought first half which saw Michael Zimarino strike the post for City and Anasmo foiled at point-blank range by Nic Speca in the visitors’ goal.

Gordon Smith and Ciaran Bramwell then both fired narrowly wide as the teams continued to trade chances at the start of the second half, but once Glory hit the front through the effervescent Zimarino, they never looked back.

63 minutes were on the clock when the in-form frontman brought a high ball into the box under control with his first touch and drilled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net with his second.

Rather than sit on their hard-earned lead, the hosts immediately set about pressing for a second goal and it duly arrived six minutes from time when Zimarino and substitute Charlie Leech combined to create a chance for Anasmo who calmly took his season tally in purple to four.

And the three points were nailed down moments later when the Bayswater defence failed to deal with a Zimarino cross and Colli punished their hesitancy by rifling home the loose ball.

In the day’s other games, which were also played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Under-18s stretched their unbeaten league run to ten games with a 1-0 win, while the Under-20s fought out a 2-2 draw.

All three teams will return to NPL WA action on Saturday (10th July) with a trip to Dalmatinac Park to take on Cockburn City.

The games will kick off at 11am (Under-18s), 1pm (Under-20s) and 3pm (First Team).
