Academy First Team move into top four with stylish win

NPL 2021 - Glory v Gwelup Croatia - Adam Zimarino strikes a free-kick

The PGFC Academy First Team climbed into the top four of the NPL WA courtesy of a resounding 5-0 win over Gwelup Croatia at Crazy Domains Stadium, Hartfield Park on Saturday.

Giordano Colli’s early penalty got Ruben Zadkovich’s side off to the perfect start and two further goals from Aidan Edwards and Jack Andrews in the space of six minutes saw them take a commanding 3-0 lead into the half-time break.

In-form strike duo Josh Anasmo and Adam Zimarino then completed the scoring in the second half, with Gwelup reduced to ten men for the final 20 minutes after ‘keeper Brett Ratajczak saw red.

It was Ciaran Bramwell who was sent tumbling in the box to earn Glory the 12th-minute penalty which Colli duly stroked into the bottom corner and soon after, Zimarino led a rapid break which culminated in Edwards’ effort finding its way past Ratajczak.

2-0 became 3-0 midway through the half, Andrews ghosting in unmarked at the far post to meet Colli’s free-kick and head home.

Glory went on to extend their advantage shortly after the hour-mark when Anasmo picked Blair Govan’s pocket, rounded the ‘keeper and found the net before gleefully celebrating with the active supporters behind the goal.

A tough afternoon for the visitors took another turn for the worse 20 minutes from time when Ratajczak was shown a straight red for handling outside the box under pressure from Anasmo.

And from the resulting free-kick, Zimarino bent home a superb effort to claim his fourth goal in as many games.

The First Team’s win wrapped up a clean sweep for the Academy sides on the day, with the Under-18s winning 3-0 and the Under-20s 4-0.

Next week’s fixtures for the senior sides are split, with the First Team taking on Armadale at Crazy Domains Stadium, Hartfield Park on Friday evening at 7.30pm and the Under-18s and Under-20s then meeting the same opponents at the same venue on Saturday at 9am and 11am respectively.
